How to Vet an HVAC Contractor in Minnesota

Minnesota regulates mechanical work through a mix of state requirements and city-level licensing, so vetting an HVAC contractor takes a couple of checks — each one quick, each one worth it. Do this for anyone you hire, including anyone we connect you with.

The checks

1. State-level: the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry (dli.mn.gov) maintains license lookups for regulated trades and residential contractors. Mechanical contractors doing work in Minnesota are generally required to file a mechanical bond with the state.
2. City-level: many Minnesota cities — including most Twin Cities metro suburbs — require their own mechanical contractor license or registration. Your city's building/permits office can confirm in one call whether the contractor is on their list.
3. Permits: furnace, AC and heat pump replacements require a mechanical permit in most Minnesota cities, with an inspection after the work. A contractor who suggests skipping the permit is telling you something.
4. Insurance: ask for a certificate of liability insurance and workers' comp.

Red flags

• No bond, no local license, or reluctance to name which cities they're licensed in.
• A quote without a load calculation for a full system replacement.
• Pressure to replace on the spot without a written estimate.
